During the course of the BLERBS project the research team felt that there was a need for a forum for the presentation and discussion of qualitative research in library and information services. So the first Libraries Without Number Conference was held at the University of Kent on 18th April 1997. Contributors were asked to present papers which explored this area.
The first conference attracted over 60 delegates and papers of high quality and interest. It was so successful that a second conference was organised on 30th September 1998. Although the standard of papers was still as high, this conference was not as successful as the first in terms of attendance, possibly due to poor timing.
Papers from both of these conferences were subsequently published as special issues of the journal, Education for Information v.15 (4), December 1997 and [issue not known at the moment].
There are tentative plans to hold another Libraries Without Number conference in April 2000. Any potential contributors are welcome to contact Jane Bex or David Zeitlyn for further information.
