 Research Training and Experience

22 August- 5 September, 1993 field assistant to American anthropologists from Field Museum (Chicago) in Aitape, West Sepik Province. We did interviews, site surveys and recorded data on contemporary economic activities as well as collecting traditional contemporary artifacts and information on traditional trade networks.

4 June-2 July, 1996. Research assistant on the project ‘Knowledge Transmission and Political Communication’, Krisa Village, West Sepik Province with anthropologists from University of Kent at Canterbury, England, in collaboration with the University of PNG and National Research Institute. This is an European Community funded project under the banner of APFT where extensive surveys were done.

23 September-23 October 1996. Aitape, West Sepik Province, when as a field assistant we carried out archaeological excavations, a collaborative research effort which included archaeologists and anthropologists from USA, Australia and PNG. Extensive archaeological excavations were carried out from which I had practical experience on laying squares, excavation, drawing sections, recording data, mapping and sample preparation.

23 December 1996-26 January 1997. Sponsored by the PNG National Museum I undertook an archaeological reconnaissance survey in the Kubalia area (Nagum and Central Boiken speaking communities) south west of Wewak where I carried out site surveys, collected artifacts and recorded oral traditions. This was the initial study from which the current BA honours proposal is based on.

5-26 June 1997, for three weeks I was field assistant to Dr. Robin Torrence and archaeologists from Australian National Museum and other collaborating institutions at Garua Island, West New Britain Province. This was a training programme for me when I was employed by the National Museum. Mainly excavations were carried out.

21 August - 5 September 1997. The European Community through its APFT programme sponsored staff of the PNG National Museum to carried out an archaeology orientated survey in the Kilimeri Census Division of West Sepik Province. As one of the prehistory staff I was practically involved both on the field and the final writing up of the report including analysing the artifacts. This is an ongoing project of which I am involved.

9-23 January 1998 a. I did a site impact assessment study for Highlands Pacific Limited commissioned by NSR Environmental Consultants. This was a study for the proposed Ramu Nickel Project in Madang Province where cultural and archaeological sites were surveyed in the proposed project areas to be affected. A preliminary report was submitted to NSR Environmental Consultants who were engaged by HPL to write up the Environmental Plan for the Ramu project.

12-19 June 1998b, a second archaeological study was done for NSR Environmental Consultants when the proposed refinery site (one of the sites I surveyed in January) was determined structurally unsuitable, again I was engaged to survey another site with the same term of reference to the earlier study. A report was prepared integrating results of both the two studies and submitted to NSR who included in their EP draft for HPL for the Ramu Nickel Project.
