FRP-PNG research puts the model of Sites of Intensive Interdisciplinary Research into practice in two locations:

PIO-TURA / PAWAIA

This model was developed by the Scientific Council of the APFT / FRP programme to adopt a holistic approach in working with people in rainforest areas.

— Research is conducted with each population over a period of several years or more. Long-term studies are carried out by Junior Researchers for the APFT / FRP programme, who are based in a village in a forest area. Their research is complemented by that of experts in the same or other disciplines who come and work on a shorter-term basis, and by appraisals and surveys carried out by teams of researchers in the wider area.

The approach entails that

research efforts are concentrated in specific research locations;
through long-term ethnographic study, attention is paid to the specific local situation;
using standardised methodologies, a catalogue of themes is explored to enable comparison;

interdisciplinarity is achieved through the interlinking of research projects conducted by researchers of different disciplines, and through the collaboration of researchers from various disciplines on single projects.

It allows for

a holistic assessment of local livelihoods, problems and possible solutions;
detailed case studies;
comparison, both with other research carried out in Melanesia, between disciplines and with other sites of APFT research around the world;
sharing of skills and expertise within a research team, which makes research results broader and more comprehensive, and thus more applicable in the real world.
