Information on the Project on Knowledge Transmission and Political Communication in the Kilimeri area

This project is carried out by the University of Kent at Canterbury, England, with the assistance of the University of New Guinea at Port Moresby. It is part of a large scale project designed to inform EC decision makers on the state of development and communication in rural areas of the tropics. Other researchers work on similar topics in Africa and the Caribbean.

We would like to interview every adult person in this area with the help of a standardised questionnaire. The questionnaire includes questions about kinship, contacts maintained and goods exchanged as well as about wage income and subsistence activities. Other questions aim at knowing better the feelings of rural populations concerning self-determination.

This project is not commercial, only our expenses will be paid. Everything which is told to us will be kept confidential and the data is not delivered to a third party. The overall aim of the project is to get a better understanding of rural peoples' attitudes towards development, environment and change in progress.

We would be very happy about your co-operation. However, if you do not wish to be visited by our interviewers, we will of course accept your decision.

Comment: Was read to every Interviewee.

Comment: Unit of Analysis was every adult. Adult being defined as people, who were socially and economically capable of founding an own household and taking care of themselves. Interviewer asked when it was not obvious. ("Suppose you leave your parents. Do you think you would be able to support yourself?") People who did not speak pidgin or were clearly confused or mentally disturbed were left out. (n < 5)

Q. 31 Is there anyone else who is important to you, not
        mentioned so far?

        INTERVIEWER:

BEFORE, NOTE THAT ADDITIONAL NAME IN THE SCHEDULE.
        NOTE THE QUESTION NUMBER, TOO.

Comment: A major change in procedure occured here. In the original questionnaire the interviewer had to ask questions 20 to 31 first, and then had to fill in the fields at the end of the questionnaire (background information). This was an exhausting procedure. We therefore agreed on asking questions 20 to 31, finish the rest of the questionnaire and then, at the end of it, ask for the background information for ego's alters. Here the procedure was changed to the following: List 4, 5, 8 and 9 were read for the first two names generated by ego. After that ego was asked to just apply the suitable. Only if ego had obviously not understood the principle, the lists were read again.

-------------------------PAGE 9 -----------------------------------------

NOW ASK FOR THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION!

‘I like to know about the persons, of whom we have
talked and ask some further questions about them, e.g.
their names, schooling and other pecularities. What
you tell us about them, we will not tell anybody else,
        we will conceal it well.’

        INTERVIEWER:

READ OUT THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS FOR EACH NAME
MENTIONED IN THE SCHEDULE AND PUT DOWN THE ANSWERS.

A Is .... male or female?

B What is his/her Christian name?

C What is his/her Fathers name?

D What hamlet does he/she live in?

E What lineage does he/she belong to?

INTERVIEWER: READ OUT THE FOLLOWING TEXT

MANY PEOPLE DO LIKE THIS. WHEN THEY VISIT ANOTHER VILLAGE AND
THEY NOTICE SOMETHING GOOD (USEFUL), E.G. A KIND OF SAGO WITHOUT
THORNS OR A KIND OF BANANA WHICH IS SOON COOKED, THEY ASK FOR SHOOTS
OR SEEDS OF THESE THINGS AND TAKE THEM TO THEIR VILLAGE AND PLANT
THEM IN THEIR GARDEN.

Q 37 You yourself, have you done like this?

                                    Yes....... 1
                                    NO........ 2

        IF YES

Q 38 From which of these villages you have taken something
        like this?
(INT: READ OUT VILLAGES OF LIST 7)
                                                                    ____

____

Comment: Instruction was added: Multiple answers possible.

Q 39 And you yourself, have you given others something to
plant in their gardens? Where did they bring it to?
(INT: READ OUT VILLAGES OF LIST 7!)
                                                                    ____

____

Comment: Instruction was dropped. Open questioning only.

Q. 40 Now I am going to give you some statements that have
been made about this country and this government.
Please tell me whether you mostly agree or mostly
disagree with each statement. Many of these issues
are complicated, but you should not worry, do not have
to rack your brain, just listen to the statements and
say what you think about them?

        Doubt about self-determination AGREE DISAGREE
        1. There are few people in this world
you can trust, when you get right
           down to it.

        2. What happens in life is largely a
           matter of chance.

        3. If the odds are against you, it’s
impossible to come out on top.

        4. I have little influence over the
           things that happen to me.

        5. I sometimes feel that I have little
control over the direction my life is
           taking.
-------------------------PAGE 14 -----------------------------------------

        6. Nowadays a person has to live pretty
much for today and let tomorrow take
           care of itself.

        7. I’ve had more than my share of
           troubles.

        8. For me one day is no different from
           another.

        9. The world is too complicated for me to
           understand.

        10. I regret having missed so many chances
            in the past.

        11. It’s unfair to bring children into the
world with the way things look for the
            future.

        12. The future is too uncertain for a
            person to plan ahead.

        13. I find it difficult to be optimistic
            about anything nowadays.

        14. No right or wrong ways to make money,
            only easy and hard.

Q. 41 Disillusionment with government. AGREE DISAGREE

        1. Most stores are honestly run.

        2. We are slowly losing our freedom to the
           government.

        3. Most politicians are more interested in
           themselves than in the public.

        4. I have little confidence in the
           government today.
-------------------------PAGE 15 -----------------------------------------

        5. The government is run by a few people
           in power.

        6. There’s little use writing to public
           officials because they often aren’t
           really interested.

        7. Public officials work for the people
           and not just for themselves.

        8. Our local government costs the taxpayer
           more than it is worth.

        9. In my opinion, this country is sick.

Comment: Due to translation problems, some of these items read slightly different when re-translated.
