1. There is one logging project - the Gogol Timber Project in Madang Province - whose social impact has been thoroughly documented in monographs by De'Ath (1980) and Lamb (1990). Since this project was initiated during the colonial period and entails the clear-felling of native forest for pulpwood production, its relationship to the more recent boom in 'selective' extraction of raw logs for export is rather like that of the Bougainville Copper Project to the second generation of large-scale mining projects in PNG: a prototype from which some lessons can be drawn, but which remains in many ways untypical of what is happening within its respective economic sector.
